Roasted Pears with Black Sesame Crunch

Roasted Pears with Black Sesame Crunch

I have three words for these Roasted Pears with Black Sesame Crumble ~ “what a pear!”. Ok I have a few more words for these breakfast pears… healthy, delicious, and super easy to make. If you are a fan of breakfast, pears, and crunchy toppings (ok, who isn’t?), then this recipe is made just for you.

I say breakfast, but you can also serve these for a healthy dessert. Either way, it’s a great way to use pears when in season. Of course pears are available year round, but the peak season is in fall and winter.

Recipe rundown…

This recipe has two components ~ the halved roasted pears and the black sesame hazelnut crunch. Let’s start with my favorite part ~ the black sesame crunch topping!

If you like granola, you’ll love this topping. It’s made with oats, black sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, hazelnuts, cinnamon and ground ginger. You just melt a little coconut oil and honey, then mix with the rest and bake til crisp. About 25-30 minutes in my oven.

Important side note: The crunch part actually needs to be baked before the pears, because it bakes at 300°. Then you bump up the oven temp for the pears.

Make the “crunch” topping in advance and store in jars

The black sesame crunch can be made in advance to keep on hand, just store it in a jar at room temp. You can even double the recipe to keep on hand for toping yogurt bowls, smoothies, and n’ice cream.

If you avoid sesame seeds for any reason, you can sub flax or chia seeds. And if hazelnuts just aren’t your favorite nut, sub cashews (my first choice), walnuts, or almonds.

Once you have your crunch ingredients ready, you just spread ’em on a pan and bake about 25-30 minutes. The trick to getting it crisp is to let it completely cool on the pan.

TIP: cool crunch topping on the baking pan so that it crisps up nicely to make the crunchy topping

Serve with vanilla coconut yogurt

Now on to the pears!

I went with bosc here, which are good for roasting, baking, etc, as they hold their shape well. They have a rough-ish brown skin and sweet white flesh.

Feel free to use your favorite pear variety, keeping in ind some varieties are better for cooking and some are better enjoyed raw. And some can be eaten either raw or cooked!

Once you have your pear prepped to bake, just drizzle with some honey and bake until tender. About 30-35 minutes. You’ll need to bump up the oven as mentioned, to 375°.

The pears are done once tender enough to eat with a spoon, about 30-35 minutes.

Then to finish the dish I serve with a swirl or dollop of my favorite Coyo vanilla coconut yogurt.  In addition to being creamy, thick and delicious, it’s free of dairy, soy, gums and other preservatives. If you look closely at the pic below you can see even the delicious flecks of vanilla bean!

Black sesame + ginger give the crunch topping a unique flavor

And that’s that, Roasted Pears with Black Sesame Crunch are easy! Call it breakfast, call it dessert, just call it your new fave recipe.
