I like bread, and that’s flat. But sometimes I like to jazz it up with various toppings, such as this recipe for Dukkah Flatbread.
This 5-minute recipe is easy to make with only three ingredients ~ dukkah spice blend, a little avocado or olive oil, and flatbread.
Dukkah (pronounced doo-kah) is a traditional Egyptian blend of spices, seeds and nuts. Dukkah has endless variations, but is traditionally made with some combination of cumin seeds, coriander seeds, sesame seeds, pistachios, hazelnuts and/or pine nuts. Other recipes call for peanuts or nigella seed.
Dukkah is usually made in a mortar and pestle or you can make it in a food processor. The blend can be used in any number of ways, but one of the most common is on flatbread. Dukkah flatbread is traditionally sold as a street food in the Middle East, and eaten for breakfast or a snack in Egypt.
Ingredients for dukkah (with red lentils)
For this Dukkah Flatbread recipe you just make a quick oil-and-spice blend with my recipe for homemade Dukkah Spice, then spread it on flatbread and lightly toast. And for the specific type of bread you can use a whole grain pita, naan, lavash or similar.
My go-to oil is La Tourangelle avocado oil, and one of my favorite spice and seed companies is Simply Organic.
