The recipe lowdown…
If you do any cooking and fruit eating, you may already have most of the ingredients on hand to make this Spicy Citrus + Avocado Salsa. You’ll need fresh citrus, lime juice, avocado, cilantro, serrano (or jalapeño) pepper, and red onion.
Then you just gently mix it all in a bowl and call it your next favorite taco topper.
Of course, you can make this recipe all year long, but citrus is in season during the winter months.
Mix different citrus for a rainbow of color
For my recipe I went with navel orange and blood orange. Blood oranges are named so because of their deep crimson color.
What is included in the citrus family, you ask?
Citrus includes all types of oranges, lemons, lime, grapefruit, key limes, pomelo and more.
For this recipe I recommend using any of the following:
- navel orange
- blood orange
- cara cara navel
- mandarins
- tangerines
- grapefruit
And if you cannot find serrano sub jalapeño, or kick up the spicy even more with fiery Thai chilis or habanero.
You can also sub other fruit for citrus when it is out of season:
- mango
- papaya
- pineapple
- peaches
- nectarines
And as I mentioned, this salsa is versatile enough to use on tacos, grain bowls, grilled seafood or chicken, with ceviche, even with chips for chips & dip.
